Reiki, in Japanese, means “Universal Life Force Energy”. The Chinese call it Chi. In Sanskrit it’s Prana. Others refer to it as The Breath. Reiki is that mysterious force without which we cannot live, and since it is the thing that all sentient beings require to sustain life, it is the force that also binds us to one another.
How does Reiki work?
I’m going to be completely honest with you: I don’t know. What I do know is that it does work. I went into my first Reiki session a skeptic and came out a believer. I didn’t understand what had just happened but I knew something had, and it was profound. Explaining how Reiki works is as easy as explaining the magic behind your mother’s kiss on your scraped knee, or the hug that just saved your day – you just can’t. It’s simply something that needs to be experienced.
What happens during a session?
During a Reiki session, you are resting safely and comfortably on a massage table, under a top sheet and a blanket. There are candles burning and soothing music playing. You are fully clothed at all times. I lightly place my hands on various parts of your body that correspond with your organs, joints, and the more esoteric energy centres of the body (chakras). This placing of the hands not only allows you to know that you are safe and not alone in your experience, it facilitates a healing transfer of energy between the two of us so, in essence, we heal one another. At no time do I touch the well known “hot spots”of the throat, breasts, buttocks and groin, and I avoid any areas you indicate on the Intake form that you receive prior to your first session.
I encourage the time of your session to be a “no speak” time; use this time to drop into deep stillness and quiet. While it is perfectly okay for you to utter whatever sounds you feel inspired to utter (laughter, sighs, snores, sobs…) please know that I will remain as much a silent and supportive witness as possible. While I may issue direction from time to time like, “If it feels right, take a deep breath into the space under my hands,” I will not engage in dialogue with you. This is your time to reconnect with yourself; I am there to walk along with you as a silent partner. There will be time after the session to ask any questions or to share whatever seems relevant, and I am always accessible by email.
What will I feel/experience?
No two people experience Reiki in the same way and the same person will have a different experience from session to session. Some common experiences are: heat and/or cold in the body; a sense of being in a dream-like state; tingling in the body; feeling awash with emotion; drowsiness or dropping into sleep. And some people feel nothing. That’s okay too. Every experience is relevant.
What is Reiki good for?
There are many claims made about the healing powers of Reiki. I am not here to dispute or deny any of those claims; in the realm of healing, anything is possible. However, in the case of my own practice, Reiki is offered solely as a source of deep relaxation and stress reduction.
Who can benefit from Reiki?
The answer is simple: Everybody can benefit from Reiki.
Give yourself the precious gift of rest and relaxation, a time just for you to regenerate and heal.
